What are the types of stress corrosion? What should be done?

Stress corrosion refers to the phenomenon where a material undergoes corrosion in a corrosive medium under the influence of stress. Based on different corrosion mechanisms and manifestations, stress corrosion can be classified into the following types:

1.Hydrogen embrittlement: The phenomenon where a metal absorbs hydrogen gas and subsequently undergoes brittle fracture under stress.

2. Chloride stress corrosion: The phenomenon where metals corrode under the influence of stress in a corrosive medium containing chloride ions.

3. Sulfide stress corrosion: The phenomenon where metals corrode under the influence of stress in a corrosive medium containing sulfides.

4. Alkaline stress corrosion: The phenomenon where metals corrode under the influence of stress in an alkaline environment.

5. Oxide stress corrosion: The phenomenon where metals corrode under the influence of stress in a corrosive medium containing oxides. 






For different types of stress corrosion, the following measures can be taken to prevent and mitigate the occurrence of stress corrosion:

1. Select appropriate materials: Choose materials with excellent corrosion resistance and stress tolerance for specific corrosive media and stress conditions.

2. Reduce stress: By optimizing the design and processing techniques, reduce or eliminate the stress exerted on the material.

3. Control environmental conditions: Control the temperature, pH value, oxygen content, etc. of the corrosive medium to reduce the corrosive effect on the materials.

4. Surface treatment: Utilize anti-corrosion coatings, anode protection, and other surface treatment methods to enhance the corrosion resistance of the material.

5. Regular Inspection: Conduct regular inspections on equipment and structures that are affected by stress corrosion, identify problems promptly and take appropriate measures.


By using the above methods, the occurrence of stress corrosion can be effectively prevented and mitigated, ensuring the safe operation of equipment and structures.
